Ever wish you could press a button and you could feel instantly motivated to do something you just don't want to do? One of the things I love about NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is that it proves time and time again how much we have control over what we do and think, despite us not always thinking so! So, yes, there are ways we can put ourselves in specific states quicker and easier than you would ever imagine. Maybe you want to feel motivated or confident or powerful or full of energy or even loved. All of these states can be elicited in many ways. In NLP, one of my favorite ways to elicit these states is through anchoring. Anchoring allows you to feel any state or emotion any time you want, and to help others do the same. It is based on the Stimulus/Response effect pioneered by Russian researcher, Ivan Pavlov in 1904. I'm sure you have heard of Pavlov's dogs where he proved that he could elicit a state of salivation with the trigger of a bell sound by conditioning the dogs. You see, any time a person is at the peak of an intense, associated state, if you provide a unique internal or external stimulus, you'll create a neurological association that you can instantly trigger by simply providing the stimulus again. This allows you to tap into past positive resources and to link them to the future for ultimate success in whatever state you want to be in. That means that if you want to be in a state of motivation, you associate yourself to a time when you were highly motivated or in the state you wish to be. Then you use a resource anchor that helps you recall that state. Do you want to learn how this can work for you? There are several types of anchors to choose and one resource anchor that I love is called The Ring of Power. It is quick and easy and really effective. Here's how it works:
- Imagine a Ring of Power in front of you as a circle about 2 feet in diameter.
- Now remember a time when you were totally motivated and when you are totally motivated. See it, hear it, feel it. Really feel like you are back in the past during that time. When you are at the peak of that state, step into the Ring.
- When the state begins to subside then step out of the Ring.
- You may add additional desired states of power one-by-one. This will strengthen the Ring of Power. Examples may be a time you felt totally powerful, a time when you felt you could have whatever you wanted, a time when you felt really energetic and had tons of energy, or a time when you felt completely confident.
- When done adding the desired states, test it by stepping into the Ring of Power and focusing on the state you want to elicit.
